There is a hidden gem for those diagnosed with cancer - located right inside Reading Hospital. When patients enter the Image Recovery Center, they are greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. They might not realize it yet, but they're about to embark on an experience staff describe as magical.

“Diagnoses can take away choices, and we want to give them back,” said Jessica Bollinger, LMT, CMF, Image Recovery Center Coordinator, Licensed Massage Therapist, and BOC Mastectomy fitter. “We help clients build self-confidence and feel good about themselves again.”

Among the feel-good services offered at the center, patients can relax while getting a manicure, enjoy a massage, or participate in a private wig fitting. According to Bollinger, the magic begins when the team uses their "superpowers" to create positive experiences for patients who entrust them with providing a "breathe easy" space during an often stressful or overwhelming time.

When patients come for their first visit, it’s a pressure-free environment. Bollinger and her team will explain the options available and support patients while allowing them to move at their own pace. The team understands that everyone has a unique approach, and each decision can be deeply personal.

The four superwomen who work at the center bring a sense of caring and compassion that charges the atmosphere with hope. Each possesses special skills that help patients feel relaxed. Their common goal is to provide those going through the cancer journey with a safe space where they can make their own decisions without having to talk about their diagnoses and treatments, Bollinger explained.

Along with Bollinger, the center staff includes Miranda Stone, a part-time Licensed Massage Therapist; Tonette Garris, a part-time cosmetologist who provides manicures, pedicures, wig consultations, and haircuts; and Mercedes Aquila, the Front Desk Coordinator. “I am proud of my team,” Bollinger said. “I can confidently tell you you’ll be treated well when you visit us.”

For example, during a wig fitting at the center, you’ll find people gathered together, trying different styles while providing support and feedback. Similar to a traditional salon, fits of much-needed laughter can be heard, as clients try out a variety of looks. Patients are encouraged to bring a friend or family member to appointments, to help them feel comfortable and enjoy the experience.

“When clients walk in the door, they often feel low and discouraged,” said Bollinger, who has worked at the Image Recovery Center for 18 years. “I’ve shared tears and smiles with patients who come in and can see themselves how they want to. Watching them go from feeling low to radiant is the best thing.”

In addition to wig fittings, patients can also find mastectomy products, swimsuits, and beauty products for sale. They can also book services, including massages, manicures, and pedicures. The services form camaraderie, and Bollinger’s repeat clients like Liz R., who at age 64 was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, are proof of this.

“I loved my time with Jessica at the center,” Liz said. “During that time, I visited the center for a wig and other cancer-friendly items. Jessica became my massage therapist and a dear friend. I have a massage every other Friday, which helps me with arthritis and circulation. I am going to be 80 and I feel so blessed.”
