Colorectal cancer is the second-deadliest cancer in both men and women combined. But it is a highly preventable and treatable disease.
March is National Colorectal Awareness Month, a time when patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates across the country share their stories and increase awareness about colorectal cancer prevention and the importance of early detection. At Pottstown Hospital – Tower Health, dark blue ribbons, and clothes are worn throughout March to spark curiosity and start a conversation about colon cancer awareness.
“The potential for colon cancer increases with age, and the disease does not cause symptoms in its early stages. However, it is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented,” said Artun Aksade, MD, who specializes in general surgery at Pottstown Hospital. “Through a colorectal cancer screening called a colonoscopy, doctors can find and remove hidden growths called polyps in the colon before they become cancerous. Removing polyps can prevent cancer altogether.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant decrease in colon cancer screening, threatening to regress years of progress toward early detection and treatment of the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, four out of every 10 Americans delayed or avoided medical care during the pandemic in 2020 because of concerns about COVID-19. “A colonoscopy can save your life,” said Dr. Aksade. “Don’t put off this simple procedure.”
If you are over the age of 45 or at increased risk of colon cancer, call Dr. Aksade’s office at 610-327-7770 to schedule your colonoscopy.
