Mammography
Accurate images are key to maintaining breast health. We offer multiple types of breast x-rays, called mammograms, to make sure we can detect any problems that may stand between you and good health.
- Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, allows doctors to see masses and distortions associated with cancers much more clearly than conventional two-dimensional mammography. With 3D mammography, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below.
- A screening mammogram is an x-ray of the breast used to detect breast changes in women who have no signs of breast cancer. It usually involves two x-rays of each breast. Using a mammogram, it is possible to detect a tumor that cannot be felt.
- A diagnostic mammogram is an x-ray of the breast used to diagnose unusual breast changes, such as: a lump, pain, nipple thickening or discharge, or a change in breast size or shape. These mammograms are used to evaluate unusual spots detected on a screening mammogram.
Women without a special condition or history generally begin having annual mammograms at age 40. Talk with your physician about a mammography schedule that is appropriate for you based on your overall health and medical history, risk factors, and personal opinion or preference.
