Tower Health today announced that Reading Hospital is one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2023, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. For the second consecutive year (2022-2023), Reading Hospital has been in the top 1 percent of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance across the most common conditions and procedures.

In addition, Reading Hospital is the #2 ranked hospital in Pennsylvania for Gastrointestinal Medical Care for 2023. For the State Ranking analysis, Healthgrades evaluated clinical performance for nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide, focusing on 18 key specialties across a mix of chronic, urgent, and surgical specialty areas.

“I thank the team at Reading Hospital for their ongoing efforts to provide high-quality care to our patients,” said P. Sue Perrotty, president and CEO of Tower Health. “Because of their ceaseless dedication to quality and excellence, they can proudly state their hospital is one of the 50 best in the country. Again. This is a tremendous achievement and demonstrates that our community can continue to depend on Tower Health’s Reading Hospital for world-class care.”

Other notable Healthgrades recognitions and awards for Reading Hospital include:

  • Top 10 percent in the Nation for Cardiac Surgery in 2023
  • Top 10 percent in the Nation for Joint Replacement in 2023
  • Top 10 percent in the Nation for Neurosciences in 2023
  • Top 10 percent in the Nation for Overall Pulmonary Services from 2013-2023
  • Top 5 percent in the Nation for Treatment of Stroke in 2023
  • Top 10 percent in the Nation for GI Medical Treatment in 2023

“Achieving Top 50 status requires the contributions of everyone at Reading Hospital,” said Charles F. Barbera, MD, the Hospital’s president and CEO. “And reaching this height two years in a row speaks to the great teamwork and dedication of all our clinical, support, and administrative teams. Maintaining this level of excellence is a real accomplishment.”

Suzanne Wenderoth, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Tower Health and Reading Hospital, added, “I am so proud of our teams for their continued work to improve upon the excellent care they provide day in and day out. Quality is important to everyone on the team, from our most experienced clinicians to our medical residents, who participate in a Quality training program in which they collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the hospital to develop Quality Improvement projects to improve patient outcomes.”

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation between America’s Best 50 Hospitals, and hospitals that did not receive the distinction. According to Healthgrades, if all hospitals performed similarly to America’s 50 Best, over 150,000 lives could potentially have been saved. Patients treated at hospitals receiving a state ranking for Gastrointestinal Medical have, on average, a 47.4% lower risk of experiencing a complication or dying while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that were not state-ranked for Gastrointestinal Medical.

“We’re proud to recognize Reading Hospital as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2023,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “As one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, Reading Hospital consistently delivers better-than-expected outcomes for the patients in their community, and is setting a high national standard for clinical excellence.”
