Reading Hospital is pleased to announce that, after a comprehensive national search, Thomas Geng Jr., DO, will be named Chair, Department of Surgery, effective February 29.  

In this role, he will be responsible for continuing the high-quality care of the hospital’s surgical services. He will help to develop the next generation of surgeons through various residency programs and academic programs, and he will take an active role in recruitment and retention of department staff. He will also work with team members across the organization to grow and expand services to meet the needs of the community.

“In his time at Reading Hospital Dr. Geng has been a valued mentor to many of his physician and Advanced Practice Provider colleagues,” said Charles F. Barbera, MD, Reading Hospital president and CEO. “I am confident he is going to lead the team with continued success.” 

Dr. Geng has served as Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery since March 2023. He began working at Reading Hospital in 2004 and has served in several leadership roles, including: Associate Chief Medical Officer; Trauma Program Medical Director; Chief, Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care; and Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. 

“Serving as Interim Chair for the Department of Surgery has been exceptionally rewarding,” Dr. Geng said. “I look forward to this new role and continuing to work with individuals across the organization, including the talented surgical team, to care for the patients in our community.”

Dr. Geng is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and he is a Certified Physician Executive from the American Association of Physician Leaders. He received his Master of Business Administration from St. Joseph’s University, completed his Surgical Critical Care/Trauma Fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and completed his surgical residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Dr. Geng attended Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after completing his Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine from The Pennsylvania State University.
