Pain-free comfort during procedures
Anesthesiology is the branch of medicine that deals with giving patients anesthesia. Anesthesia is a medication that prevents pain during surgery or medical procedures.
Types of Anesthesia
There are three types of anesthesia:
- General Anesthesia – medication that puts the entire body "to sleep" for surgery
- Regional Anesthesia – medication that numbs certain areas of the body so pain cannot be felt during surgery
- Monitored or Conscious Sedation – anesthesia that allows you to remain conscious, or to sleep lightly, during a procedure
What to know before your procedure
You may need to visit our PreAdmission Testing (PAT) Center for an evaluation. At this time, you will meet with an anesthesiologist, or anesthesia doctor, to review the procedure you will undergo as well as your anesthesia options. You will be asked to give a medical history so that the anesthesiologist can tailor your anesthesia to your needs. If you are concerned about post-surgery pain management, please speak to the anesthesiologist.
