If you have knee pain, swelling, and stiffness that’s caused by a worn or damaged knee joint — either from aging or diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, or knee tumors — a knee replacement can offer relief. Knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, replaces the damaged cartilage and bone in your knee joint with plastic or metal (implants or prostheses).

Our skilled orthopedic surgeons use the latest approaches in knee replacement, including minimally invasive surgery that offers less pain and scarring and a faster recovery.

You get comprehensive care and individual attention from an expert team. And we help coordinate all services you need, including a personalized rehabilitation plan. We make sure you’re well-informed about how to prepare and what to expect throughout your treatment.

Types of Knee Replacement

After a complete evaluation, we design a treatment plan that gives you the best possible results. We use the least invasive approaches that offer less pain and scarring and a faster recovery. Our surgeons use sophisticated imaging equipment to customize your procedure, resulting in precise placement of the new joint and a more natural bend in your knee.

Our orthopedic surgeons offer advanced approaches, including:

  • Total knee replacement. We remove your entire knee joint and the surrounding ligaments and replace them with artificial parts. As you bend your knee, the artificial joint’s metal and plastic surfaces glide more easily, creating less wear on the joint.
  • Partial knee (unicompartmental) replacement. If your knee joint damage is limited to a single area, we use this procedure to replace only the affected area with metal or plastic and leave the surrounding ligaments in place.
  • Kneecap replacement. We use this method when only the underside of your kneecap (patella) and the thighbone area where the kneecap rests are damaged. We replace these areas with metal and plastic without replacing the healthy bone, cartilage, and ligaments.
  • Knee replacement revision. If a previous knee implant is damaged or isn’t functioning as it should, revision surgery repairs some or all of the parts. Our orthopedic specialists have the advanced expertise to perform this complex procedure.

Advanced Knee Replacement Expertise

When you choose us for a knee replacement, you work with a team specializing in joint replacements. We use sophisticated technology and draw from the latest approaches to design a treatment that gives you the best possible results.

We offer:

  • Minimally invasive knee replacement. Our surgeons use advanced imaging equipment to perform surgery through a few small incisions. This offers less pain and scarring and lets you recover faster.
  • MAKO robotic system. Our surgeons use the MAKO robotic technology, which allows us to pre-plan your surgery. We perform the operation by guiding the robotic arm to precisely remove bone and cartilage. The result can mean a better fit and a more comfortable experience.
  • Muscle- and tissue-sparing approaches. We use the least invasive methods to relieve knee pain, which allows us to preserve surrounding muscle — such as the quadriceps — ligaments, and other soft tissue. It can offer a faster recovery and a more natural bending motion.
  • Safe, effective pain management. We use the latest pain management methods to keep you comfortable after surgery, such as nerve blocks, pain medicine shots, and opioid-free pain medications. You get personal attention to ensure your comfort.
  • Patient-centered care. We designed our care environment around the needs of joint replacement patients. Our dedicated units are staffed by doctors, nurses, and therapists who specialize in joint replacement care. You get personal attention to ensure your experience is as comfortable as possible.

The Knee Replacement Process

After your evaluation, our joint replacement coordinator will guide you through the entire hip replacement process and take care of all the details. We help you prepare for surgery and recovery.

Most people are in the hospital one or two nights after knee replacement, but it depends on your health and surgery type. Sometimes, people go home the same day. Most people return to normal activities after two or three months.

You can expect:

  • Pre-surgery preparation assistance. We offer advice to help you get as healthy as possible before surgery with lifestyle, nutrition, and exercise advice — including "prehab" appointments with a physical therapist to evaluate your function and recommend exercises. We also help you plan for your recovery at home.
  • Pre-admission testing. We help you schedule routine tests, such as blood tests, to make sure you’re ready for surgery.
  • Knee replacement education. You learn everything you need to know about preparing for and recovering after surgery. Our classes and comprehensive patient guide ensure you’re well-informed.
  • Walking after surgery. A therapist will help you begin walking the same day as surgery and explain how to perform daily activities and gradually increase activity.
  • Knee replacement rehabilitation. We provide physical therapy while you’re in the hospital and outpatient appointments to help you continue once you return home. Our therapists help you regain strength, mobility, and flexibility as quickly and safely as possible.
