Reading Hospital was founded by a group of dedicated physicians who used their own resources to ensure advanced medical care was available to the community. Reading Hospital has served the local community since 1867 and in its current location since 1926 to ensure advanced medical care continues to this day.
Now, the Department of Medicine is the largest clinical department of Reading Hospital, Tower Health. The department spans 16 divisions of medicine. This comprises of 300+ physicians (MD/DO) and 80+ advanced licensed practitioners. Care provided to our patients spans ambulatory primary care through to transplant medicine. Patient volumes have grown over the years, serving 46,030 ambulatory patients and 19,796 patient discharges from all specialties of medicine during calendar year 2019.
The department fulfills the missions of our organization by providing high-quality patient care, medical education, and research. The department is dedicated to medical education, providing medical students, residents and fellows opportunities to be educated in their specialty care and advance their careers.
Department of Medicine physicians contribute to the clinical outcomes recognized nationally and regionally for patient care such as Healthgrades, Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score, AMI – 2020 Mission Lifeline Gold Award, Highmark Center of Excellence for Cardiac Care, Joint Commission Certified, 2020 GWTG’s Gold Plus Award + Honor Roll, Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center, CARF certified for Stroke Rehab Program.
Research endeavors include clinical trials, quality and safety outcomes, medical education and translational research, to name a few. Research opportunities include investigator initiated, multi-disciplinary and partnerships with industry and other academic organizations.
The Department of Medicine physicians have faculty appointments with Drexel University College of Medicine. A four-year regional campus of the College at Tower Health, located within walking distance to Reading Hospital, will begin educating its first year class in 2021. Third- and fourth-year medical student clerkships are currently established.
The Department of Medicine adheres to our organization’s belief in “Advancing Health.
