Christopher A Butts, DO
Program Director, Reading Hospital Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program Associate Professor of Surgery, Drexel University College of Medicine Medical Director, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical CareChristopher Butts, PhD, DO, FACOS, FACS, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at Perlman School of Medicine. He is currently the Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, Medical Director of the SICU, and a practicing trauma/acute care surgeon at Reading Hospital. Before joining the staff at Reading Hospital, he obtained a PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. From there he went on to complete his osteopathic training at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he received his DO degree in 2012 and completed his surgical residency in 2017. He completed his Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ in 2018. He is a fellow of both the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons and is also active in several national societies including the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Southeastern Surgical Congress. His research interests include trauma and emergency surgery outcomes, disparities in trauma and emergency general surgery care, and injury prevention.
Abigail C Coots, MD
Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, Drexel University School of Medicine Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of PennsylvaniaAbigail Coots, MD is a trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care surgeon in the Division of Trauma at Reading Hospital. She is board-certified in general surgery and Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Coots graduated from medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She then completed a general surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and a Research Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She served as a general surgeon at US Navy Hospitals in Oak Harbor, Washington, and Okinawa, Japan. After completing her time in the Navy, Dr. Coots completed a surgical critical care fellowship at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
At Reading Hospital, Dr. Coots is focused on the education of medical students and residents. She is core faculty for both the General Surgery Residency Program and the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. She is also the co-clerkship director for medical student clerkships and is the resident director in the Division of Trauma. In addition to her interest in medical education, she is interested in patient safety, quality, and process improvement.
Thomas A Geng, DO
Chairman, Department of Surgery, Reading Hospital Trauma Surgeon, Surgical Intensivist, Acute Care General Surgeon, Reading Hospital Clinical Professor of Surgery, Drexel University Professor of Surgery, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic MedicineIn 2004, Thomas Geng Jr. began his career here, at Reading Hospital, as a general surgeon in private practice. After one year, he joined the Trauma team, and then in 2007, he completed his fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania. He returned to Reading Hospital after fellowship and has worked continuously in the Trauma department since that time. He has held various leadership roles within the hospital, including Division Chief of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery; Trauma Program Medical Director; Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program Director; and Associate Chief Medical Officer. He is currently Chairman of the Department of Surgery and continues in his clinical role as a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon. Dr. Geng was instrumental in bringing surgery residents to the hospital from PCOM in 2009; fostering and developing that relationship until we transitioned to our own General Surgery Residency. As the original program director of the fellowship, he successfully transitioned the program from ACOS to ACGME accreditation on the first attempt. Although he is no longer the program director of the fellowship, he continues to advise and impart his institutional and programmatic memory to the current leadership.
Michael F Musso, DO
Director of Emergency Readiness Temporary Faculty of Surgery, Drexel University College of Medicine Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of PennsylvaniaMichael Musso, DO, FACOS was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He completed medical school in 2013 at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and his general surgery residency in 2018, through Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Following that, he completed a surgical critical care fellowship at Reading Hospital in 2019 and has been practicing in the Division of Trauma ever since. He is board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. The focus of his professional interests extends beyond hospital walls to include pre-hospital care and disaster medicine. In addition to his civilian role, Dr. Musso is a proud member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and serves as the surgeon for the Ground Surgical Team out of Biddle Air Guard Station in Horsham, PA. In his free time, he enjoys reading and spending time with his wife, Jody, an Emergency Medicine physician also at Reading Hospital, their three daughters, and their dog Netter.
Eugene F Reilly, MD
Vice President, Chief Medical Information Officer, Tower Health Interim Division Chief, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, Reading Hospital Interim Medical Director, Trauma Program, Reading Hospital Associate Professor of Surgery, Drexel University College of Medicine Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of MedicineEugene Reilly, MD, is an experienced trauma surgeon and informaticist, board-certified in surgery, surgical critical care, neurocritical care, and clinical informatics. He has been a clinical leader at Tower Health in the architecture of clinical care spaces, processes, and information systems, and the integration of the three. He has presented his work in regional, national, and international venues.
In addition to his clinical leadership at Tower Health, Dr. Reilly has been involved in advocacy and policy-making at both the state and national level, and has a strong interest in education and research, serving as faculty for both the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and General Surgery Residency at Reading Hospital.
