James A Rothschild, MD

Program Director , Reading Hospital Anesthesiology Residency Program

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for visiting our website and for expressing interest in our residency training program. While we are a new anesthesia residency program, Reading Hospital is not new to graduate medical education, with our oldest residency program in the Department of Internal Medicine dating back to 1957. I hope that you will take the time to get to know our program and consider becoming a member of our Tower Health Family.

Started by our chair, Dr. David Matson, in 2020, the anesthesia residency training program at Tower Health will graduate its first class in the spring of 2024. Our residents come from diverse backgrounds, hail from all over the world, and have wide-ranging clinical and academic interests. They are all individually unique but share a common bond: they are the most devoted, kind, and compassionate physicians that I could ever hope to one day call my future colleagues. I am immensely proud of the program and the people that we have attracted. I consider the opportunity to build this residency program to be one of the greatest honors and accomplishments of my career. I hope that when we meet, my enthusiasm for this program and this hospital will be apparent to you.

Our residents complete the majority of their training at our flagship hospital in Reading, Pennsylvania. Reading Hospital is a level 1 trauma and tertiary care center located in the suburb of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. While we exist in the urban environment offered by the city of Reading, our primary catchment area is rural farmland, offering a remarkable blend of surgical case types, clinical acuity, and patient demographics. I believe this diversity of clinical experience affords our residents an optimal training environment on their journey toward becoming an anesthesia attending. Our faculty are world-class, having trained at many of the major academic centers on the Eastern seaboard. Finally, we have the kindest, most collegial, and clinically accomplished nurse anesthetist colleagues that I have ever worked with. This is genuinely a nice place to work and a superb place to train.

Our goal at Tower Health is to create a warm, welcoming, family-friendly environment that encourages a diligent work ethic and fosters clinical excellence in our trainees. Dr. Matson and I share a vision of developing professionals through mentorship and personally-tailored educational experiences to cultivate future leaders. I invite you to come and contribute to our hospital, our department, and our residency program. We need compassionate and motivated leaders like you to continue to build this program and to train future anesthesiologists. Please consider us in your residency search.

Warmly,

Jim Rothschild, MD
